Vale Trail 8. Magical Forest
minimal stiles and livestock, mainly forest tracks with short sections on quiet roads, refreshments at (seasonal) fruit farm and café. Dogs welcome in outdoor seating area. Expect muddy sections after rain.
Hensol Forest is traffic free, dog walking heaven. The network of paths means options are endless so we’ve put together a couple of suggestions to make things easier. Our half hour ‘forest taster’ can be extended to an easy half day ramble. On the longer route you are rewarded with a visit to the peaceful oasis of Pysgodlyn Lake.
Hensol Half hour forest taster
Take the left hand track out of the car park into the forest and at the 3 way fork go straight ahead along a track to reach a road. Turn right along the road and continue until a wide path crosses the road in both directions. Turn right here* along the track which will lead you back to the car park.
Pyscodlyn Lake extension
To extend your walk turn left along the track to reach a road. Cross and go through a gap in the hedge straight ahead to follow a rough path (sometimes muddy) to reach the lake. Follow the path around the edge of the lake to point 16 on the map when you begin a gentle climb to a wide junction of paths. Go straight ahead, away from the lake, towards point 15 on the map. Before you reach the barrier turn right to follow a track. At the end of the track follow the tarmac road signposted to Hensol (also signed ‘unsuitable for HGV’s). When you reach a track bisecting the road in both directions turn left onto the track to lead you back to the car park.
