Introducing an exciting Art History daytime event that’s sure to appeal to all culture lovers out there!

We are delighted to welcome Stella Grace Lyons, the Arts Society accredited Art History Lecturer to Penarth Pier Pavilion for what promises to be a very special and enlightening event.

Celebrating Parisian art of the 19th Century, with a spotlight on Morisot, Manet, and the Impressionists, join us for this day of special interest on Saturday 20th May to learn more about these inspiring artists.

A new Parisian leisure society developed in the second half of the 19th century, providing ample material for artists who portrayed not only the excitement and energy of this vibrant period but also its darker side.

This event looks at the way ‘scenes of modernity’ were depicted through paintings of the new absinthe-fuelled cafe society, the nascent emancipation of women, and the rise of the bourgeoisie.

It will make particular reference to the works of Manet, the Impressionists and one of the most underappreciated female artists, Berthe Morisot. The Morisot talk is particularly timely, ahead of a major UK exhibition of her work at Dulwich Picture Gallery this summer.

The day starts with coffee and pastries in the beautiful Pavilion Gallery from 9.30am, followed by the first Art History talk at 10.30am in the Pavilion cinema. This will be followed by tea, coffee, and delicious homemade cookies back in the Gallery.

The second Art History talk begins at 12.15pm, followed at 1.15pm by a light lunch and time to mingle with fellow guests back in the Gallery.

The final Art History talk of the day begins at 2.15pm, after which guests are once again invited into the Gallery for tea with scone, cream & jam before bidding farewell!
