The Big Beach Build
This August, Barry Island was host to a wonderful family fun sandcastle building competition 'The Big Beach Build'. Lots of groups entered and the results were truly inventive, amazing and sandy-licious.
There is no better way to spend a day on the beach than by building a sandcastle - whether the mutli-storey type or just a tap out with a bucket and spade.
Congratulations to everyone who took part and, of course, the winner of the Golden Bucket: The Sand Masters.
Here are just some of the wonderful sandcastle creations...
There is so much to do when visiting Barry Island, here's a few to whet your appetite.
You can make the day extra special by hiring one of the iconic beach huts that grace the Eastern promenade, there is no better place to eat your picnic or fish 'n'chips and watch the world go by. In between the two sets of beach huts is the traversing 'climbing' wall - always a favourite with its unique hand grips, it's great fun to try and find the hidden words! Also there is a spray water feature - a fab way to cool down.
From the Eastern shelter make your way down the promenade, a lovely paved walkway, nice and flat and wide. On the promenade you will come across Bay 5 coffee shop serving great refreshments and food. Keep on going and you will reach the small children's rides on the Square which is home to Marco's cafe, you can have your picture here with a back drop of Gavin and Stacey. Head on down the prom and under the Western Shelter where there are fish 'n; chip shops, amusement arcades and a proper Italian ice cream parlour.
Up from the prom is the Island Gardens complete with palm trees and for the inspiring golfers amongst you Smugglers Cove Adventure Golf with pirates dominating the skyline. Just behind the crazy golf is the RNLI shop and Visitor Experience - so interesting for all the family and well worth a visit.
Back from the beach, prom and gardens are lots of arcades, cafes and shops and, of course, the Fun Fair.
The Island is very compact and easy to get around, if you are a little less mobile, we have beach wheelchairs for loan so that you can enjoy the golden sands of Whitmore Bay. There is something for the whole family at Barry Island.
Oohh and we would love to see your sandcastle photos, just tag us in @visitthevale. It would be good to get some practice in, we'd love to make the Sandcastle competition a yearly event.
